Okay yes the Inferno is technically hell, but I mean, come on, some of the sights and people and craziness down there are pretty cool to see. Of course it is not cool to be in hell, but I mean if Dante can get through to the other side so can someone else right? So if you ever find yourself on a spirtual journey through hell led by your favorite poet, here are the top 10 sights to check out:
1. The gates of hell. A famous quote is inscribed that reads "Abandon All Hope, You Who Enter Here". Depressing sure, but definitely a spot to visit.
2. The monster Minos. He examines each one's sin, judging and disposing as he curls his tail. He is the connoisseur of sin, discerning every spirit in its proper place in Hell. Minos obviously plays en extremely important and significant role for every sinner.
3. The monster Cerberus. He has three heads, is monstrous and cruel. He barks doglike at the sould immersed in the third circle, with his red eyes and grease-black beard. Cerberus claws the horde of spirits with his talons. His reptile body furthermore makes Cerberus one of the most fascinating beings to catch a glimpse of.
4. Plutus, otherwise known as the great enemy, lives in hell with a special relationship to the sin most closely associated with material wealth. He possesses the power of speech and the ability to understand--or at least react to--Virgil's dismissive words, while at the same time displaying a distinctly bestial rage and probably animal-like features as well. Plutus is a rare and mysterious guardian worth getting a selfie with.
5. The River Styx. It is a vast swamp encompassing the fifth circle of hell, in which the wrathful and sullen are punished. Here one will find fetid waves and marsh fumes, and the friendly boatman Phlegyas.
6. City of Dis. The descriptions of the city, including moats, watch towers, high walls, and a well guarded entrance--suggest a citizenry ready for battle. The city is guarded by fallen angels, and if one is so lucky, they may enter this allusive dwelling.
7. River of Blood. The shades of murderers and bandits are immersed to varying depths, boiling in the blood. Armed with bows and arrows, thousands of Centaurs patrol the bank of the river, using their weapons to keep the souls at their allotted depth, a rare sight to see indeed. The centaurs are very frinedly here and enjoy conversation.
8. Forest of Souls and Harpies. These foul creatures with the head of a woman and body of a bird--are perched in the suicide-trees, whose leaves they tear and eat--thus producing both pain and an outlet for the accompanying laments of the souls. The Harpies are a strangely unique sight, and the trees have voices all their own.
9. Desert of Red Hot Sand. This area is for Blasphemers, who must lie prone on a bank of sand. The falling flakes of fire keep the sand perpetually hot, ensuring that the souls burn from above and below. It is like witnessing a real life toaster of torture.
10. Dis. The size of his arms alone exceeds all of the giants of the Eighth Circle of Hell put together. He stands in the icy lake, his torso rising above the surface. Gazing upward, Dante sees that Lucifer has three horrible faces, one looking straight ahead and the others looking back over his shoulders. Beneath each head rises a set of wings, which wave back and forth, creating the icy winds that keep Cocytus frozen. Each of Lucifer’s mouths holds a sinner—the three greatest sinners of human history, all Traitors to a Benefactor. WHAT. A. THING. TO. WITNESS. You can call your grandma and tell her you got to meet Dis in all his glory.
