Calypso was able to keep the famed warrior Odysseus on her island as her lover for years. Woah! No one truly knows what happened between them but Odysseus, the gods, and Calypso herself. We were able to sit down with Calypso and ask her about how she able to keep a man like that interested for so long.
Colloquium Crier: What was it like living with Odysseus?
Calypso: All his days he'd sit on the rocks and beaches, wrenching his heart with sobs and groans and anguish, gazing out over the barren sea through blinding tears.
CC: That sounds so tragic and sad... Did he ever fall in love with you?
C: He slept with me in my arching cave--he had no choice--he was an unwilling lover.
CC: So you're saying you were more interested in him than he was with you?
C: That is debatable.
CC: The rumor is that Athena begged her father to allow Odysseus to travel back home and that Hermes came as a messenger to you. Any comments?
C: I let Odysseus go on my own, however I do believe the gods to be hard-hearted and jealous-- scandalized when goddesses sleep with mortals, especially when on saves that mortal's life, cherishing him and welcoming him warmly.
CC: Alright then... So how was Odysseus able to leave your island?
C: I told him I was willing, heart and soul, to send him off at last. I told him to build a raft, and that I would stock her with food and water, ruddy wine--all to stave off hunger. I told him I would give him clothing and send him a stiff wind so he could reach his native country unharmed.
CC: Was Odysseus pleased by this news?
C: He believed I was plotting something else to cause him harm. The man was delusional.
CC: And then?
C: I called him wicked for thinking such a thought and swore to never plot some new intrigue to harm him.
CC: A source tells us that you tried to convince him to stay afterwards, asking if a mortal woman could rival immortal goddess.
C: Odysseus admitted that Penelope falls short of me, my beauty, stature. He however longed to see his homeland. About five days later I launched him from my island.
CC: Well we appreciate you speaking with our reporters about the matter of Odyseuss as one of your lovers. Thank you Calypso
C: Thank you for speaking with me.
Turns out that Odyseuss may not have been as head-over-heels for Calypso as she led on to believe...possibly forcing him to sleep with her on her lonely island? Maybe that is what it takes nowadays to keep a man interested, even for a brilliant immortal beauty.
